Utah Code 58-55-102 defines the plumbing trade as mechanical work on the installation, alteration, repair, removal or maintenance of pipes, fixtures and fittings in buildings, or within three feet beyond the outside walls, for the water supply, the discharge of waste, the building drainage system, and the delivery of gas. Small jobs

Utah's small job exemption (Utah Code 58-55-305) covers some projects under $7,000 including labor and materials, but work on a plumbing or electrical system must still be done by a licensed plumbing or electrical contractor, and work on a component such as a faucet, toilet, fixture, outlet or switch must be done by a licensed contractor or licensed journeyman. On January 1, 2027 the exemption moves to Utah Code 58-55-110, which leaves out any work on an electrical or plumbing system or a component of one.
